Terms of Service

Last updated 2026-07-26

This is a draft written to be honest and useful, not a reviewed legal document. No lawyer has read it. It should not be relied on as legal advice, and it makes no promises beyond what is written here — treat it as an accurate description of current practice, pending professional review.

What you're agreeing to

These terms cover your use of BalanceMCP: the web app, the hosted ledger it stores your books in, and the MCP tool endpoint an AI assistant connects to on your behalf. By creating an account you agree to them. If a specific term here turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.

What BalanceMCP is

BalanceMCP is a double-entry bookkeeping ledger designed to be operated through an AI assistant over MCP, alongside a web view of the same books. It is bookkeeping infrastructure, not tax or accounting advice — nothing it or an assistant connected to it says should be treated as professional tax, legal, or accounting guidance. If you need that, talk to an accountant; export your books to hand them the data.

Your account and your data

You're responsible for what happens through your account, including anything an AI assistant does using an API key you've created. Keep API keys as carefully as you'd keep a password — anyone holding a valid key can call any of the 19 tools on your books today, including the ones that post, reverse, or lock entries. There is currently no way to issue a key limited to read-only access; see the AI Usage Policy for what that means in practice.

You own the bookkeeping data you put into BalanceMCP. We store and process it to run the product; we don't claim ownership of it, and you can export all of it as CSV at any time.

Plans and payment

The current plan is free, with no card required. A paid plan with automatic bank-feed syncing is planned but is not yet built or available for purchase — nothing on this product currently charges you money, and nothing here should be read as a commitment about the price or availability of a future plan. If and when a paid plan launches, these terms will be updated with its actual billing terms before it does.

What you can't do

Don't use BalanceMCP to store data you don't have the right to store, attempt to access another user's books, or attempt to circumvent the rate limits or authentication on the API. Automated abuse of the service — beyond ordinary use through an AI assistant — isn't permitted.

Availability and changes

This is an early-stage product. Features change, and the tool set may grow or be adjusted as the product matures. We'll try not to break something you depend on without notice, but this draft makes no uptime guarantee and no service-level commitment. Keep your own exports if the data matters to you.

Ending your use

You can stop using BalanceMCP at any time; export your books first if you want a copy outside the product, since there is no self-serve account deletion yet. We may suspend or terminate an account for violating these terms, particularly anything that risks another user's data or the integrity of the ledger itself.

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

BalanceMCP is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. It is bookkeeping software, not a substitute for a qualified accountant's judgment, and while it enforces real double-entry rules at the database level, it cannot catch every kind of mistake — see the Security and AI Usage pages for exactly what is and isn't enforced. To the extent the law allows, our liability for anything arising from your use of the product is limited to what you've paid for it, which today is nothing.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change materially, we'll update the date at the top of this page. As with the Privacy Policy, expect real revision once this draft has had professional legal review.
