3000equityNormal balance: Creditbusiness3000 — Owner's Equity
Owner's Equity is the account everything else in the equity section ultimately rolls up into — the owner's total claim on the business, once every contribution, every draw, and every year of retained profit is accounted for. It is less a place you post to directly and more a running summary of the other three equity accounts working together.
As an equity account, it carries a normal credit balance: money and value flowing to the owner's benefit increase it, and reductions decrease it. In practice, most of the entries that actually build or shrink equity land in the more specific accounts nearby — Owner's Contribution for money going in this year, Owner's Draw for money coming out, Retained Earnings for prior years' closed-out profit — and this account mainly holds the opening balance from when the books were first set up, plus any true-up adjustments.
It is worth being precise about what is not here: this year's still-open profit does not live in this account. Current-year income and expenses stay on the income statement, and their cumulative effect shows up in Retained Earnings (3999), which is computed live from all-time income minus all-time expenses — there is no year-end closing entry in this system that rolls a result into either account.
What belongs here
- the opening balance recorded when the books were first set up
- prior years' closed-out results, if not tracked separately in Retained Earnings
- general equity adjustments needed to reconcile the books to actual ownership stake
- a one-time correction when the opening balance was entered incorrectly
What does not belong here
- money the owner put in this year specifically — Owner's Contribution (3100) is the more precise place for that
- money the owner took out this year — Owner's Draw (3900)
- current-year profit still being earned — it stays on the income statement in Sales, Service Revenue, and the expense accounts; its cumulative effect appears in Retained Earnings (3999), computed live, not here
Where it shows up
Sits at the bottom of the balance sheet's equity section alongside Owner's Contribution, Owner's Draw, and Retained Earnings — together, the four should sum to the owner's total stake in the business.
Common questions
- What is the difference between this account and Owner's Contribution?
- Owner's Contribution tracks money going in during the current year specifically. This account is the broader rollup — the opening balance and prior adjustments — that everything else feeds into over time.
- Does this account show this year's profit?
- No — current-year profit lives on the income statement, and its cumulative, all-time effect shows up in Retained Earnings (3999), which is computed live rather than rolled in at a year-end close. This account itself is not where either figure appears.
